Name the apex predator of Madagascar.

If you said “lemur” — lemurs are prey, not predators. If you said “crocodile” — Nile crocodiles are present but not the dominant land predator. If you said nothing, because you genuinely have no idea what hunts at the top of Madagascar’s food chain, you are in the company of most people on earth — including, for much of the 19th century, the scientists who were supposed to be studying it.

The fossa (Cryptoprocta ferox) is Madagascar’s largest carnivore and its apex predator. It is also one of the most taxonomically confused animals in the history of zoology — a creature so unlike anything else that researchers spent over a century arguing about what family it belonged to, placing it variously with cats, civets, mongooses, and at one point in its own entirely separate family before genetic analysis finally settled the question in the 1990s.

The answer, when it came, was surprising. The fossa is most closely related to the mongoose. It just doesn’t look like one.

88 Million Years of Isolation

Madagascar separated from the African mainland approximately 88 million years ago, and from India around 88 million years ago as well, drifting into the Indian Ocean to become the world’s fourth largest island and one of its most extraordinary evolutionary laboratories. The animals that arrived on Madagascar — carried by ocean currents on floating vegetation, or present when the island separated — evolved in complete isolation from the rest of the world’s fauna for tens of millions of years.

The result is a fauna unlike anywhere else on earth. Approximately 90% of Madagascar’s wildlife is found nowhere else on the planet. The lemurs — the primates that fill ecological niches occupied by monkeys and apes elsewhere — evolved from a single ancestral population that arrived on the island millions of years ago and diversified into over 100 species. The chameleons, the tenrecs, the day geckos — all of them evolved in isolation, filling ecological roles that on other continents are occupied by entirely different animals.

And into this ecosystem, the fossa evolved as the top predator — the animal that keeps everything else in check, that sits at the apex of the food web, that every other animal on the island has evolved to fear or avoid.

What a Fossa Actually Is

The fossa is, physically, a remarkable animal. Adults reach up to 80 centimetres in body length, with a tail nearly as long again — a tail that functions as a counterbalance during the high-speed arboreal chases that are the fossa’s primary hunting method. Its body is low-slung and muscular, covered in short reddish-brown fur. Its legs are powerful, its claws semi-retractable, and its ankles unusually flexible — capable of rotating to allow the fossa to descend trees headfirst, a feat that most cat-like animals cannot perform.

It hunts lemurs. Primarily, almost exclusively, lemurs — pursuing them through the forest canopy at speeds and with an agility that most observers describe as startling for an animal of its size. It can follow a lemur through the upper canopy, leaping between branches, changing direction mid-air, for extended chases that end when the lemur makes a mistake or tires. It also hunts on the ground, taking birds, reptiles, and small mammals when lemurs are not available.

It is active both by day and by night — an unusual characteristic for a large predator, and one that makes it effective across the full range of lemur activity patterns, since different lemur species are active at different times.

The Classification Problem

When European naturalists first encountered the fossa in the 19th century, they were confronted with an animal that did not fit neatly into any existing category. It had the body shape and movement of a cat. It had the facial structure and some behavioural characteristics of a mongoose. Its internal anatomy showed features associated with civets. Its skull was unlike any of them.

It was placed in the family Viverridae — the civets — for most of the 19th and early 20th centuries, largely because that was the family that seemed to fit least badly. Researchers who examined it more carefully suspected this was wrong but lacked the tools to determine what the correct classification should be.

The answer came with molecular phylogenetics — the analysis of DNA sequences to determine evolutionary relationships. When the fossa’s genome was analysed in the 1990s, it became clear that it belonged to the family Eupleridae — a family of carnivores found exclusively in Madagascar, all of them descended from a single mongoose-like ancestor that colonised the island approximately 18 to 20 million years ago.

The fossa’s cat-like appearance is convergent evolution — the same process that produced the barreleye’s telescope eyes and the thorny devil’s water-channelling spines. Faced with the ecological role of a large, agile, arboreal predator, the fossa’s ancestors evolved the body plan that best suited that role, independently arriving at a form that resembles a cat without being related to one.

A Predator Running Out of Forest

The fossa is endangered. Its population is estimated at fewer than 2,500 mature individuals, and it is declining. The reason is straightforward: Madagascar has lost more than 90% of its original forest cover, and the fossa, as a large predator that requires extensive territory and abundant prey, is acutely sensitive to habitat loss.

A single fossa requires a home range of up to 26 square kilometres. As forest fragments become smaller and more isolated, fossa populations become fragmented too — separated from each other, unable to interbreed, increasingly vulnerable to the genetic problems that come with small, isolated populations. In areas where forest has been cleared for agriculture, fossa occasionally prey on domestic chickens, bringing them into conflict with local communities and resulting in retaliatory killing.

Conservation efforts focus on protecting the remaining forest fragments and creating corridors between them — allowing fossa populations to remain connected and genetically diverse. But the pressure on Madagascar’s forests from a rapidly growing human population with limited economic alternatives is intense, and the fossa’s future is far from secure.

The Predator Nobody Knows

The fossa is not famous. It does not appear on wildlife documentaries with the frequency of lions or wolves. It does not inspire the conservation campaigns that surround elephants or great apes. It is an apex predator on an island that most people associate with lemurs and chameleons, doing a job — keeping the ecosystem in balance, controlling lemur populations, maintaining the structure of the food web — that goes largely unnoticed until it stops being done.

But the fossa has been doing that job for millions of years, in a forest that is disappearing around it, with a body plan that evolution arrived at independently and a taxonomic identity that took science 150 years to work out.

It deserves to be known. And it is running out of time to be saved.
