If you have ever scrolled through a wildlife photography page and stopped dead at a photograph of a large, pot-bellied monkey with a nose the size of a small cucumber, you have met the proboscis monkey. It is one of those animals that makes you do a double-take — surely, you think, that cannot be real. But it is. And the story behind that extraordinary nose is even more fascinating than the nose itself.
Introduction: The Monkey That Looks Like It Belongs in a Comedy
The proboscis monkey (Nasalis larvatus) is one of the most visually distinctive primates on Earth. Native to the island of Borneo in Southeast Asia, it is named after its most obvious feature — a nose so large, so pendulous, and so utterly impractical-looking that it has made the proboscis monkey one of the most photographed and talked-about animals in the world.
But here is the thing: that ridiculous nose is not a joke of evolution. It is a sophisticated biological tool, shaped by millions of years of natural and sexual selection, that plays a crucial role in the monkey’s survival and reproduction. Once you understand why the proboscis monkey has that nose, you will never look at it the same way again.
What Does the Proboscis Monkey Look Like?
The proboscis monkey is a large, stocky primate with a distinctive reddish-brown coat on its back and a pale, cream-coloured belly. Adult males are significantly larger than females — one of the most pronounced examples of sexual dimorphism among primates. A fully grown male can weigh up to 24 kilograms and measure nearly 75 centimetres from head to tail, making it one of the largest monkeys in Asia.
The face is pale and pinkish, with deep-set eyes and — of course — that nose. In adult males, the nose can grow to over 10 centimetres in length, drooping well below the chin. In females and juveniles, the nose is much smaller and upturned, giving them a comparatively cute appearance. The male’s nose is so large that it actually gets in the way when he eats — he has to push it aside to get food into his mouth.
Proboscis monkeys also have distinctive pot bellies, caused by their complex, multi-chambered stomachs — more on that shortly. And they are excellent swimmers, with partially webbed feet that make them one of the most aquatic of all primates.
So Why the Big Nose?
This is the question everyone asks, and the answer involves both survival and sex.
Sexual selection is the primary driver. In the world of proboscis monkeys, size matters — and that includes the nose. Females consistently prefer males with larger noses. Research has shown that males with bigger noses have larger body sizes, higher testosterone levels, and larger testes — all indicators of genetic fitness. The nose is, in evolutionary terms, an honest signal of male quality.
But the nose does more than just look impressive. It also amplifies sound. When a male proboscis monkey calls — a loud, honking vocalisation used to warn of predators, attract females, and assert dominance — his large nose acts like a resonance chamber, making the call louder and more impressive. The bigger the nose, the louder and more resonant the call. Females can literally hear which males are the most genetically fit.
Thermoregulation may also play a role. Some researchers believe the large, blood-vessel-rich nose helps regulate body temperature in the hot, humid climate of Borneo’s rainforests — though this theory is less well established than the sexual selection explanation.
Life in the Mangroves
The proboscis monkey is found exclusively on the island of Borneo, which is divided between Malaysia, Indonesia, and Brunei. It lives in lowland forests, particularly mangrove forests, riverine forests, and swamp forests along the coasts and riverbanks of the island.
This is a primate that has built its entire life around water. Proboscis monkeys are almost always found near rivers, estuaries, or coastlines. They sleep in trees overhanging the water — a behaviour that gives them a quick escape route from predators like clouded leopards. They travel along rivers, often swimming across them with surprising ease. And they feed on the leaves, seeds, and fruits of the mangrove and riverine trees that line Borneo’s waterways.
Their diet is almost entirely composed of leaves — particularly unripe leaves, which are lower in sugar and less likely to ferment dangerously in their complex stomachs. This is where that pot belly comes in. Like cows, proboscis monkeys have a multi-chambered foregut filled with specialised bacteria that ferment and break down the tough cellulose in leaves. This fermentation process produces gas — which is why proboscis monkeys always look like they have just eaten an enormous meal.
This specialised digestive system means that proboscis monkeys cannot eat ripe fruit or sugary foods — the sugars ferment too rapidly in their stomachs and can cause potentially fatal bloating. This makes them extremely difficult to keep in captivity, and almost impossible to keep in zoos outside of a few specialist facilities in Asia.
Social Structure and Behaviour
Proboscis monkeys live in harem groups — one dominant male with a group of females and their offspring. These groups typically contain between 3 and 32 individuals. Bachelor males — those without a harem — form their own all-male groups and spend their time on the periphery of harem territories, waiting for an opportunity to challenge a dominant male or attract females to form a new group.
The dominant male is responsible for protecting the group from predators and rival males. He does this primarily through vocalisation — that loud, resonant honking call that carries across the water and through the forest. When threatened, he will also bare his teeth, shake branches, and make dramatic leaping displays to intimidate rivals.
Females in a harem group often form strong social bonds with each other and cooperate in raising young. Infants are born with striking blue faces — a colouration that fades to the adult pinkish-white within a few months. The blue face is thought to elicit nurturing behaviour from adult females in the group.
Swimming: The Proboscis Monkey’s Secret Superpower
One of the most remarkable things about the proboscis monkey is its ability to swim. While most primates avoid water, the proboscis monkey actively uses it — swimming across rivers up to 20 metres wide, sometimes in crocodile-infested waters, with a confident breaststroke that would not look out of place in a swimming pool.
Their partially webbed feet give them extra propulsion in the water, and they are capable of swimming underwater for short distances when necessary. This ability to cross rivers gives proboscis monkey groups access to a much larger territory than they could otherwise exploit, and it is a key part of their survival strategy in Borneo’s fragmented forest landscape.
Conservation Status: A Species Under Pressure
The proboscis monkey is classified as Endangered on the IUCN Red List. Its population has declined by more than 50% over the past 40 years, and the decline is continuing.
The primary threat is habitat destruction. Borneo has lost enormous areas of lowland forest to palm oil plantations, logging, and agricultural expansion. The mangrove and riverine forests that proboscis monkeys depend on are among the most heavily targeted habitats on the island — they are cleared for aquaculture, coastal development, and agriculture. As these forests disappear, proboscis monkey populations become fragmented and isolated, unable to move between patches of suitable habitat.
Hunting is also a significant threat. Despite legal protection in Malaysia, Indonesia, and Brunei, proboscis monkeys are still hunted for bushmeat in some areas. Their large size makes them a tempting target, and their habit of sleeping in trees overhanging rivers makes them easy to spot and shoot from boats.
Human-wildlife conflict is increasing as forests shrink and proboscis monkeys come into contact with agricultural land. They are sometimes killed by farmers protecting crops, even though their specialised diet means they rarely eat cultivated plants.
What Is Being Done?
Conservation efforts for the proboscis monkey are focused on habitat protection, community education, and ecotourism. In Sabah, Malaysian Borneo, the Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary has become a successful ecotourism destination, where visitors can observe proboscis monkeys at close range in a semi-wild setting. The revenue generated supports local conservation efforts and gives communities a financial incentive to protect the monkeys rather than hunt them.
Organisations like the Borneo Conservation Trust and WWF Malaysia are working to protect and restore the riverine and mangrove forests that proboscis monkeys depend on, and to create wildlife corridors that allow fragmented populations to reconnect.

The proboscis monkey is more than just a curiosity. It is a flagship species for the conservation of Borneo’s lowland forests — one of the most biodiverse and most threatened ecosystems on Earth.
