In the frozen forests of Russia’s Far East, where temperatures plunge to minus 40 degrees Celsius and snow lies metres deep for months at a time, lives the largest cat that has ever walked the Earth. It weighs as much as a professional rugby player, measures nearly four metres from nose to tail, and can bring down prey ten times its own body weight. It has survived ice ages, the collapse of empires, and decades of relentless hunting.

But it may not survive us.

Introduction: The Tiger at the Edge of the World

The Siberian tiger (Panthera tigris altaica) — also known as the Amur tiger, after the river that runs through its territory — is the largest subspecies of tiger and the largest wild cat on Earth. It is an animal of extraordinary power, beauty, and resilience, perfectly adapted to one of the harshest environments on the planet.

And yet, despite surviving conditions that would kill most animals, the Siberian tiger came within a whisker of extinction in the twentieth century. At its lowest point, in the 1940s, fewer than 40 individuals remained in the wild. Today, thanks to one of the most intensive conservation efforts in history, the population has recovered to approximately 500 individuals — a remarkable achievement, but one that leaves the species still deeply vulnerable.

This is the story of the Siberian tiger — where it lives, how it hunts, why it nearly disappeared, and what is being done to ensure it never does.

The Largest Cat on Earth

The statistics alone are staggering. A fully grown male Siberian tiger can weigh up to 300 kilograms — nearly twice the weight of a Bengal tiger — and measure up to 3.7 metres from nose to tail tip. Its paws are the size of dinner plates. Its canine teeth can reach 7.5 centimetres in length. Its roar can be heard three kilometres away.

But the Siberian tiger is not just large — it is built for cold. Unlike its tropical cousins, it has a thick layer of subcutaneous fat and an exceptionally dense, pale coat that provides insulation against the brutal winters of the Russian Far East. Its fur is paler and less vividly striped than other tiger subspecies — an adaptation that provides camouflage in the snow-covered taiga forest. Its paws are wide and heavily padded, acting like natural snowshoes that distribute its weight across deep snow.

These adaptations allow the Siberian tiger to thrive in conditions that would be lethal to most large predators — but they also mean it is uniquely dependent on the specific ecosystem of the Russian Far East, making it particularly vulnerable to habitat loss.

Life in the Taiga

The Siberian tiger’s home is the temperate broadleaf and mixed forest of the Russian Far East — a vast, remote wilderness known as the Amur-Heilong region, spanning parts of Russia, China, and North Korea. This is one of the most biodiverse temperate forests on Earth, home to Amur leopards, brown bears, Eurasian lynx, and hundreds of bird species.

The tiger’s territory here is enormous. A single male may patrol a range of up to 2,000 square kilometres — an area larger than some small countries. This vast territory is necessary because prey density in the cold taiga is much lower than in tropical forests. The tiger’s primary prey species are Siberian roe deer, sika deer, wild boar, and red deer — animals that are themselves thinly distributed across the landscape.

A Siberian tiger may travel 20 kilometres in a single night in search of prey, using a combination of stealth, patience, and explosive speed to make its kills. Despite its enormous size, it is capable of short bursts of speed up to 80 kilometres per hour — faster than a racehorse over short distances. It hunts primarily by ambush, using the forest cover to get within striking distance before launching a devastating attack.

A single large kill — a red deer or wild boar — can provide enough food for several days. The tiger will cache the remains of a large kill under snow or leaves and return to feed over multiple days, a behaviour that is essential for survival in an environment where prey can be scarce.

The Near Extinction of the Siberian Tiger

The Siberian tiger’s story in the twentieth century is one of the most dramatic near-extinctions in conservation history. At the beginning of the century, several thousand tigers roamed the forests of the Russian Far East, northeastern China, and the Korean peninsula. By the 1940s, relentless hunting — for sport, for the fur trade, and for traditional medicine — had reduced the population to fewer than 40 individuals.

The Soviet government, recognising the catastrophe, banned tiger hunting in 1947 — one of the earliest legal protections for any tiger subspecies anywhere in the world. The ban worked. Over the following decades, the population slowly recovered, reaching approximately 250 individuals by the 1980s.

Then came the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. The economic chaos that followed devastated conservation efforts across Russia. Poaching surged as desperate people turned to wildlife trafficking for income. Tiger parts — bones, skins, organs — commanded enormous prices on the black market, particularly in China, where they were used in traditional medicine. In the decade following the Soviet collapse, the Siberian tiger population declined sharply, and the species once again teetered on the edge.

The Recovery — and the Threats That Remain

The recovery of the Siberian tiger since the late 1990s is one of conservation’s genuine success stories. Intensive anti-poaching efforts, international funding, and cooperation between Russia, China, and conservation organisations have stabilised and slowly grown the population to approximately 500 individuals today.

Russia’s commitment to tiger conservation has been remarkable. The country established a network of protected areas across the Amur region, deployed dedicated anti-poaching units, and implemented strict penalties for tiger hunting and trafficking. In 2010, Russia hosted the Global Tiger Summit — the first international summit dedicated to a single species — at which thirteen tiger-range countries committed to doubling the global wild tiger population by 2022. That target was largely met.

But the threats have not disappeared. Poaching remains the most immediate danger — a single tiger skin can fetch tens of thousands of dollars on the black market, and tiger bones are still used in traditional Chinese medicine despite international bans. Habitat loss is an increasing concern as logging, agriculture, and infrastructure development fragment the taiga forest. Prey depletion — caused by overhunting of deer and wild boar by local communities — reduces the food available to tigers and pushes them into conflict with humans. And climate change is altering the taiga ecosystem in ways that are difficult to predict but potentially severe.

Human-wildlife conflict is a growing challenge. As tiger numbers increase and human settlements expand into tiger territory, encounters between tigers and people — and tigers and livestock — are becoming more frequent. Tigers that kill livestock are sometimes killed in retaliation, and the fear of tigers in rural communities can undermine public support for conservation.

The Amur Tiger in China

One of the most exciting recent developments in Siberian tiger conservation is the recovery of a small but growing population in northeastern China. For decades, tigers were functionally extinct in China — occasional individuals crossed the border from Russia, but no breeding population existed. In recent years, camera traps have documented tigers breeding in China’s Jilin and Heilongjiang provinces for the first time in generations.

China has responded by establishing the Northeast China Tiger and Leopard National Park — a vast protected area along the Russian border specifically designed to support recovering tiger and Amur leopard populations. This cross-border cooperation between Russia and China represents one of the most promising developments in large carnivore conservation anywhere in the world.

Why the Siberian Tiger Matters

The Siberian tiger is an apex predator — the top of the food chain in the taiga ecosystem. Its presence regulates prey populations, which in turn shapes the vegetation and structure of the forest. Remove the tiger, and the ecosystem changes fundamentally — prey species overpopulate, overgraze, and the forest degrades.

But the tiger’s importance goes beyond ecology. It is a cultural icon — revered in Russian, Chinese, and Korean traditions for centuries. It is an economic asset — tiger tourism generates significant revenue in the Russian Far East. And it is a symbol of what conservation can achieve when governments, scientists, and communities work together.

The Siberian tiger came back from 40 individuals. That is one of the most extraordinary conservation achievements in history. But with only 500 individuals remaining, it remains one wrong policy decision, one surge in poaching, or one disease outbreak away from catastrophe.
