At full sprint, the cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) is the fastest land animal on Earth. It accelerates from zero to 100 kilometres per hour in approximately three seconds — faster than most sports cars — and reaches a top speed of around 120 kilometres per hour. Its stride at full speed covers seven to eight metres. Its specially adapted spine flexes and extends with each stride like a coiled spring, adding power and length to every step. Its semi-retractable claws grip the ground like running spikes. Its enlarged heart, lungs, and nasal passages deliver oxygen to muscles at a rate that no other land animal can match.
For approximately 20 seconds, the cheetah is the most perfectly engineered running machine that evolution has ever produced.
And then it has to stop. Exhausted, overheated, and vulnerable, it must rest for up to 30 minutes before it can eat, defend its kill, or flee from danger. In those 30 minutes, lions, leopards, hyenas, and even vultures may steal its meal. The cheetah — the fastest animal on Earth — is also one of Africa’s most disadvantaged large predators.
Speed, it turns out, is not enough. And the threats the cheetah faces have nothing to do with how fast it can run.
A Cat Unlike Any Other
The cheetah is the most unusual of the big cats — so unusual that it occupies its own genus, Acinonyx, separate from the lions, leopards, tigers, and jaguars of the genus Panthera. It diverged from its closest relatives approximately 5 million years ago, and the evolutionary path it took produced an animal that is, in many respects, more like a greyhound than a cat.
It cannot roar — instead it chirps, churrs, and produces a high-pitched yelp that sounds startlingly like a bird. It cannot retract its claws fully — they remain partially exposed at all times, like a dog’s, providing traction rather than grip. It hunts by sight rather than smell, using its extraordinary vision — it can spot prey from up to 5 kilometres away — and its distinctive black “tear marks” running from the inner corner of each eye to the mouth are thought to reduce glare from the sun, functioning like the black grease that athletes apply under their eyes.
It is the only big cat that has been tamed and used by humans for hunting — a practice that dates back at least 5,000 years, with records of cheetahs kept by ancient Egyptians, Assyrians, and Mongols. The Mughal emperor Akbar the Great reportedly kept over 1,000 cheetahs during his reign in the sixteenth century. This long history of human capture has left a mark on the cheetah’s genetics that is still felt today.
The Genetic Catastrophe
Here is a fact about cheetahs that sounds impossible: if you took a skin graft from one wild cheetah and transplanted it onto any other wild cheetah on Earth, the recipient’s immune system would not reject it. In most mammals, skin grafts between unrelated individuals are rejected because the immune system recognises the donor tissue as foreign. In cheetahs, this does not happen — because cheetahs are so genetically similar to each other that their immune systems cannot tell the difference.
This extraordinary genetic uniformity is the result of a population bottleneck — a catastrophic reduction in population size — that occurred approximately 10,000 to 12,000 years ago, at the end of the last ice age. Whatever caused this bottleneck — climate change, disease, human hunting, or some combination — it reduced the cheetah population to a tiny number of individuals, possibly just a few dozen. All cheetahs alive today are descended from those survivors.
The consequences of this genetic bottleneck are profound and ongoing. Cheetahs have extremely low genetic diversity — lower than any other large carnivore, and comparable to highly inbred laboratory animals. This makes them vulnerable to disease — a single pathogen can sweep through a population because individuals lack the genetic variation that allows some to resist infection. It causes reproductive problems — cheetah sperm quality is poor, with high rates of abnormality, and captive breeding programmes have struggled with low fertility and high infant mortality. And it means that the species has very limited capacity to adapt genetically to new challenges — including the rapidly changing environments created by climate change and human activity.
The cheetah is, in a very real sense, already a species in genetic crisis — before you add habitat loss, poaching, and human-wildlife conflict to the equation.
The Collapse of the Range
One hundred years ago, cheetahs were found across most of Africa, through the Middle East, and across Central Asia to India. The Asiatic cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus venaticus) ranged from the Arabian Peninsula to the Indian subcontinent — the last cheetahs in India were shot by a maharaja in 1947, and the subspecies is now reduced to fewer than 12 individuals surviving in the remote deserts of Iran, making it one of the most critically endangered mammals on Earth.
In Africa, the cheetah’s range has contracted dramatically. From an estimated population of 100,000 individuals a century ago, the African cheetah population has declined to approximately 7,000 individuals today — a 93% reduction. It has been eliminated from 91% of its historical range. It survives in 33 African countries, but in many of these its presence is marginal — small, isolated populations in fragmented habitat, cut off from each other by human settlements and agricultural land.
Critically, approximately 77% of cheetahs live outside protected areas — on farmland, communal land, and unprotected wilderness. This makes the cheetah uniquely dependent on human tolerance for its survival. Unlike lions or elephants, which can be protected within national parks, the cheetah’s vast territorial requirements — a male coalition may range over 1,500 square kilometres — mean that no park system can contain a viable population. The cheetah’s future depends on whether the people who share its landscape choose to live alongside it.
The Pet Trade: A Hidden Crisis
While habitat loss is the structural cause of the cheetah’s decline, the illegal pet trade is an acute and accelerating crisis that receives far less attention than it deserves.
In the Gulf states — particularly the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait — cheetahs have become status symbols among the wealthy. A cheetah cub, posted on social media draped across a luxury car or sitting in a penthouse apartment, signals wealth, power, and exclusivity. The demand for cheetah cubs as pets has created a thriving illegal trade that is devastating wild populations in East Africa and the Horn of Africa.
The trade works like this: poachers in Ethiopia, Somalia, and Kenya capture cheetah cubs — usually by killing the mother and taking the litter. The cubs are then smuggled through a network of traffickers, often via Somaliland and Yemen, to buyers in the Gulf. The journey is brutal — mortality rates among trafficked cubs are estimated at 70% or higher, meaning that for every cub that reaches a buyer, several others die in transit.
The Cheetah Conservation Fund estimates that approximately 300 cheetah cubs are trafficked out of the Horn of Africa every year. Given that the total wild cheetah population in the region is only a few thousand individuals, this represents a catastrophic drain on the population.
What Is Being Done
The Cheetah Conservation Fund, founded by Dr Laurie Marker in Namibia in 1990, is the world’s leading cheetah conservation organisation. Its approach is built on the recognition that cheetah survival depends on human coexistence — and that coexistence requires addressing the economic realities of the farmers and herders who share cheetah habitat.
Its livestock guarding dog programme — placing Anatolian shepherd dogs with farming communities — has dramatically reduced livestock losses to cheetahs, removing the primary motivation for retaliatory killing. Its research programme has produced the most comprehensive data on cheetah ecology and genetics of any organisation. And its advocacy work has raised global awareness of the illegal pet trade, leading to increased enforcement action in transit and destination countries.
In India, an ambitious reintroduction programme brought eight Namibian cheetahs to Kuno National Park in September 2022 — the first cheetahs on the Indian subcontinent in 75 years. The programme has been controversial — critics argue that the habitat is insufficient and the genetic match between African and Asiatic cheetahs is imperfect — but it represents a bold attempt to restore a species to part of its historical range.
The Race That Matters
The cheetah can run at 120 kilometres per hour. It cannot outrun the destruction of its habitat, the theft of its cubs, or the slow erosion of its genetic diversity. The race that will determine its future is not measured in seconds over a few hundred metres — it is measured in decades, across millions of square kilometres of African savanna, in the decisions of governments, corporations, consumers, and communities.
The world’s fastest animal is running out of room. Whether it runs out of time depends on us.
