Every year, millions of tourists arrive in Australia hoping to see a kangaroo. What they imagine is the postcard version — a gentle, doe-eyed marsupial hopping lazily across a sun-baked plain. What they sometimes encounter is something rather different: a 90-kilogram male standing two metres tall, arms locked around a rival’s neck, delivering rapid-fire kicks to the abdomen with claws that can open flesh like a blade.

The kangaroo contains multitudes.


Australia’s Most Recognisable Animal

There are four species of kangaroo: the red kangaroo, the eastern grey kangaroo, the western grey kangaroo, and the antilopine kangaroo. The red kangaroo (Macropus rufus) is the largest — the largest marsupial on Earth, and the largest native land animal in Australia.

Adult male red kangaroos are formidable animals. They stand up to 2 metres tall when upright, weigh between 55 and 90 kilograms, and are built like athletes — broad shoulders, powerful forearms, and hindquarters that contain some of the most efficient muscle tissue of any mammal. Females are considerably smaller, typically a third of the male’s weight, with a more slender build suited to the demands of almost continuous reproduction.

Red kangaroos range across the arid and semi-arid interior of Australia — the vast, sun-scorched outback that covers most of the continent’s centre. They are supremely adapted to one of the harshest environments on Earth.


Built for the Outback

The Australian outback is brutal. Summer temperatures regularly exceed 45°C. Rainfall is unpredictable and often absent for months. Food and water can be separated by enormous distances. Most large mammals would not survive a week in these conditions.

Kangaroos have been solving this problem for millions of years, and their solutions are extraordinary:

Thermoregulation: When temperatures soar, kangaroos lick their forearms — which contain a dense network of blood vessels close to the surface — allowing evaporative cooling to reduce their core body temperature. They are also largely nocturnal during summer, resting in shade during the hottest hours and feeding at dawn, dusk, and through the night.

Water efficiency: Red kangaroos can survive on the moisture contained in green vegetation alone, going weeks without drinking standing water. Their kidneys are highly efficient, producing concentrated urine that minimises water loss.

Energy efficiency: The kangaroo’s hopping gait is one of nature’s most energy-efficient locomotion systems. At speeds above 15 km/h, the tendons in their legs store and release energy like springs — meaning that the faster they hop, the less energy they use per kilometre. At cruising speed, a kangaroo uses less energy than a similarly sized running mammal. This allows them to cover vast distances — up to 70 km in a single night when searching for food — without exhausting their energy reserves.

Top speed: Red kangaroos can reach 70 km/h in short bursts and sustain 40 km/h for several kilometres — fast enough to outrun most predators.


The Pouch: One of Nature’s Most Remarkable Inventions

Kangaroos are marsupials — mammals that give birth to extremely undeveloped young and complete their development outside the womb, in a pouch. The kangaroo’s reproductive system is one of the most extraordinary in the animal kingdom.

A newborn red kangaroo — called a joey — is born after just 33 days of gestation. At birth, it is approximately 2.5 centimetres long, weighs less than a gram, and is essentially a foetus: blind, hairless, with undeveloped hind limbs. Yet it possesses functional forelimbs and a powerful instinct that drives it to crawl unaided through its mother’s fur to the pouch — a journey of several centimetres that takes approximately three minutes and which the joey completes entirely on its own.

Once inside the pouch, the joey attaches to a teat and begins a development process that lasts approximately 8 months before it first emerges. Even after leaving the pouch, young kangaroos — now called “young at foot” — continue to return to the pouch for warmth and nursing for several more months.

Most remarkably, a female kangaroo can have three offspring at different stages simultaneously: a joey at foot, a joey in the pouch, and an embryo in a state of suspended development (diapause) — paused until the pouch becomes available. This system allows kangaroos to reproduce almost continuously while managing the demands of each offspring at its appropriate developmental stage.


Social Life and the Boxing Match

Red kangaroos live in loose groups called mobs, typically of 10 or fewer individuals, though temporary aggregations of hundreds can form around water sources during drought. Social structure is fluid — individuals move between groups freely, and there are no permanent territorial boundaries.

Among males, dominance is established through ritualised combat — the famous “boxing” behaviour that has made kangaroos internet celebrities. Two males will stand upright, grip each other’s shoulders or neck, and deliver powerful kicks to the abdomen with their hind feet. These kicks are not playful — the claws on a kangaroo’s hind feet are large, sharp, and capable of causing serious injury. Dominant males gain priority access to females in oestrus.

Despite this capacity for violence, kangaroos are not aggressive animals by nature. The vast majority of their time is spent feeding, resting, and engaging in gentle social grooming. Aggression between males is typically brief and ritualised, with the loser simply hopping away.


Predators and Threats

Before European settlement, the kangaroo’s main predators were the thylacine (now extinct), the dingo, and wedge-tailed eagles. Today, dingoes remain the primary natural predator of adult kangaroos, while eagles take joeys and young animals.

Humans have had a complex relationship with kangaroos since arriving in Australia. Indigenous Australians hunted kangaroos for tens of thousands of years — sustainably, as part of a deep ecological knowledge system. European settlers introduced large-scale hunting for meat and leather, and established pastoral farming that both competed with kangaroos for grazing land and provided new water sources that allowed populations to expand into previously uninhabitable areas.

Today, kangaroos are the most numerous large wild mammals in Australia — with a population estimated at 40 to 50 million, roughly double the human population of the country. They are not endangered. But they face ongoing pressure from vehicle strikes, drought, habitat fragmentation, and a commercial harvesting industry that kills several million animals annually for meat and leather.
