Introduction
There are birds that are beautiful. There are birds that are intelligent. There are birds that are fast, or loud, or ecologically important in ways that make them worth protecting.
The cassowary is all of these things. It is also the only bird in the world that wildlife rangers in its native range treat with the same caution they would apply to a large crocodile.
The southern cassowary (Casuarius casuarius) is the third-largest bird on earth, after the ostrich and the emu. It stands up to 1.8 metres tall, weighs up to 85 kilograms, and is covered in dense, hair-like black feathers that give it an appearance unlike any other bird alive. Its neck is bare, coloured in vivid blues and reds that shift in intensity with the animal’s mood. Its head is topped with a bony casque — a helmet-like protrusion whose function is still debated by researchers. And on each of its three-toed feet, the inner toe bears a dagger-like claw that can reach 12 centimetres in length.
That claw is why the cassowary has the distinction of being listed in the Guinness World Records as the world’s most dangerous bird. It is not a distinction awarded lightly.
What Is a Cassowary?
The cassowary belongs to the ratites — a group of large, flightless birds that includes the ostrich, emu, rhea, and kiwi. There are three living cassowary species: the southern cassowary, the northern cassowary, and the dwarf cassowary, all found in New Guinea and northeastern Australia.
The southern cassowary is the largest and most studied. It inhabits tropical rainforest in northeastern Queensland, Australia, and across much of New Guinea — dense, wet, lowland forest where its dark colouration and quiet movement make it surprisingly difficult to spot despite its size.
Its feathers are unlike those of most birds. Rather than the interlocking barbs that give most bird feathers their structure and aerodynamic properties, cassowary feathers have loose, hair-like barbs that hang freely — giving the bird a shaggy, almost prehistoric appearance that is entirely appropriate for an animal whose lineage extends back tens of millions of years.
The casque on its head is one of the cassowary’s most distinctive and most debated features. It is composed of a spongy, keratin-covered structure that grows throughout the bird’s life. Proposed functions include pushing through dense vegetation, amplifying low-frequency calls, thermoregulation, and social signalling. The honest answer is that no single explanation has been definitively confirmed, and the casque may serve multiple functions simultaneously.
The Weapon
The cassowary’s inner toe claw is the feature that defines its relationship with humans and with the other animals in its ecosystem.
At up to 12 centimetres in length, straight, and sharply pointed, it functions as a dagger rather than a hook — designed for stabbing and slashing rather than gripping. The cassowary delivers this weapon with a powerful forward kick, using its legs — which are among the most powerful of any bird, capable of supporting and propelling a body of up to 85 kilograms — to drive the claw into its target with force sufficient to cause deep puncture wounds and lacerations.
Documented cassowary attacks on humans number in the hundreds, with the most serious resulting in deep wounds to the legs and abdomen. There have been confirmed human fatalities — the most recent in 2019, when a captive cassowary in Florida killed its owner. Historical records from New Guinea and Australia document additional fatalities, though the exact number is difficult to establish with certainty.
The vast majority of attacks occur when cassowaries are cornered, when they associate humans with food and become aggressive in pursuit of it, or when a female is protecting chicks. A cassowary that has been fed by humans — a common problem in tourist areas of Queensland — loses its natural wariness and can become dangerously aggressive when food is not forthcoming.
Ecology and Behaviour
The cassowary is primarily frugivorous — it feeds on fallen fruit, and its role in the rainforest ecosystem is one of the most ecologically significant of any animal in its range.
It is one of the only animals large enough to swallow and disperse the seeds of large rainforest fruits — fruits whose seeds are too big for smaller animals to consume whole. The cassowary swallows these fruits entire, digests the flesh, and deposits the seeds — intact and often scarified by passage through the digestive system in a way that improves germination — at distances of up to a kilometre from the parent tree. It is, in the most literal sense, a forest architect — a species whose feeding behaviour shapes the composition and distribution of the rainforest it inhabits.
The cassowary’s social structure is unusual among birds. It is largely solitary, with males and females coming together only to mate. After mating, it is the male who incubates the eggs and raises the chicks — a reversal of the typical avian pattern that is shared with the other ratites. The male incubates a clutch of 3 to 5 eggs for approximately 50 days, then raises the chicks for up to 16 months, defending them aggressively against any perceived threat.
It is during this period that cassowaries are most dangerous to humans. A male with chicks will charge without warning, and the combination of size, speed — cassowaries can run at up to 50 kilometres per hour — and the dagger claw makes such a charge genuinely life-threatening.
The Threat
The southern cassowary is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, with the Australian population — estimated at fewer than 4,000 individuals — considered particularly at risk.
The primary threats in Australia are habitat loss, vehicle strikes, dog attacks, and human interference. The cassowary’s rainforest habitat in northeastern Queensland has been significantly reduced and fragmented by agricultural and residential development, forcing birds to cross roads and move through human-modified landscapes where they are vulnerable to vehicles and domestic dogs.
Vehicle strikes are the leading cause of cassowary mortality in Australia. Roads that cut through cassowary habitat create lethal barriers, and the birds — which have no instinctive fear of vehicles — are struck with tragic regularity. Conservation organisations have worked with road authorities to install warning signs, reduce speed limits, and create wildlife crossings in critical areas, with some success.
Dog attacks are the second major cause of mortality, particularly of chicks and juveniles. A single dog can kill multiple cassowaries, and the impact on a small, fragmented population can be severe.
Conservation
Conservation efforts for the cassowary in Australia are coordinated through a combination of government programmes, NGO initiatives, and community engagement. Habitat protection and restoration — particularly the replanting of rainforest corridors to reconnect fragmented patches — is a priority. Road safety measures have reduced vehicle strike mortality in some areas. Community education programmes are working to reduce the feeding of wild cassowaries, which habituates them to humans and increases the risk of dangerous encounters.
In New Guinea, where the majority of the world’s cassowaries live, conservation is complicated by the importance of the bird in traditional culture and as a food source. Cassowaries are hunted and kept in captivity across New Guinea, and the sustainability of this use varies considerably by region.
