In a laboratory at the University of Rochester, a researcher named Vera Gorbunova has spent years studying an animal that most people would cross the street to avoid. It is small, hairless, and deeply strange-looking — a creature that appears to have been assembled from leftover parts, with translucent wrinkled skin, enormous protruding teeth, and eyes so small they are nearly useless. It lives underground in complete darkness, in colonies of up to 300 individuals, in the arid scrublands of East Africa.
It also does not get cancer. Ever. In decades of research, across thousands of specimens studied in laboratories around the world, scientists have never once documented a spontaneous cancer in a naked mole rat. Not a single case.
For an animal that lives as long as it does — up to 37 years, nearly ten times longer than any other rodent its size — this is not just unusual. It is, by the standards of mammalian biology, essentially impossible.
The Numbers That Don’t Add Up
Start with the lifespan. A house mouse lives for 2 to 3 years. A rat lives for 2 to 4. These are the naked mole rat’s closest relatives in terms of body size, and their lifespans follow the pattern that applies to almost every mammal on earth: small body, fast metabolism, short life.
The naked mole rat (Heterocephalus glaber) weighs between 30 and 80 grams. By every biological rule that governs mammalian ageing, it should live for 6 years at most. Instead, it routinely lives past 30. The oldest recorded naked mole rat in captivity reached 37 years — making it, pound for pound, the longest-lived mammal on earth by an enormous margin.
And it does not age the way other mammals do. In most species, the risk of death increases exponentially with age — a phenomenon so universal it has its own name, the Gompertz law of mortality. In the naked mole rat, researchers have found that the risk of death does not increase with age at all. A 20-year-old naked mole rat is no more likely to die in any given month than a 2-year-old one. It appears, statistically, not to age.
This is not a rounding error. It is a fundamental violation of one of the most consistent patterns in biology.
Why It Doesn’t Get Cancer
The cancer question is where the naked mole rat becomes genuinely extraordinary.
Cancer occurs when cells divide uncontrollably — when the normal mechanisms that regulate cell growth fail, and a cell begins replicating without limit. Every mammal that has been studied develops cancer at some rate. Humans, mice, dogs, elephants — all of them accumulate cancerous cells over time, and all of them develop tumours with a frequency that increases with age.
The naked mole rat does not. And researchers have now identified at least part of the reason why.
Naked mole rat cells produce an unusually large version of a molecule called hyaluronan — a substance found in the connective tissue of all mammals, but present in the naked mole rat at concentrations five times higher than in humans or mice. This high-molecular-weight hyaluronan appears to create a physical barrier around cells that prevents them from crowding together — and it is cell crowding that is one of the key triggers for cancerous growth.
When researchers bred naked mole rats that lacked the gene responsible for producing this form of hyaluronan, the animals developed tumours. The cancer protection was real, and it was directly linked to this single molecular mechanism.
But that is not the only protection. Naked mole rat cells also have unusually stringent quality control over their own protein production — they make fewer errors when building proteins than other mammals do, and they are better at detecting and destroying malformed proteins before they can cause damage. Their DNA repair mechanisms are more efficient. Their mitochondria — the energy-producing structures inside cells — generate fewer of the damaging free radicals that accumulate in ageing tissue.
The naked mole rat is not just resistant to cancer. It appears to have evolved multiple independent mechanisms that together create a level of cellular maintenance that no other mammal comes close to matching.
A Life Without Pain
There is one more thing about the naked mole rat that deserves attention, because it is the kind of fact that stops people mid-sentence when they hear it for the first time.
The naked mole rat does not feel certain kinds of pain.
Specifically, it does not respond to acid pain or to the burning sensation caused by capsaicin — the compound that makes chilli peppers hot. In most mammals, these stimuli trigger an immediate pain response through a specific receptor called TRPV1. In the naked mole rat, this receptor is present but wired differently — it does not transmit the pain signal in the same way.
The reason is almost certainly environmental. Naked mole rat colonies live in sealed underground burrows where carbon dioxide levels can reach concentrations that would cause severe respiratory distress in most mammals. High CO2 creates an acidic environment in tissue — and an animal that felt acid pain every time it breathed would be in constant agony. The naked mole rat evolved, over millions of years, to simply not register that signal.
Researchers studying pain pathways in humans — particularly in the context of chronic pain conditions and inflammatory diseases — have found the naked mole rat’s nervous system to be a remarkable natural experiment in how pain can be selectively switched off without affecting other sensory functions.
What It Means for Us
The naked mole rat is not a cure for cancer. It is not a solution to human ageing. The mechanisms that protect it are deeply embedded in its biology, and translating them directly to human medicine is a challenge that will take decades of research, if it proves possible at all.
But it is a proof of concept. It demonstrates that a mammal — an animal with the same basic cellular machinery as a human being — can live ten times longer than expected, resist cancer completely, and maintain cellular function into extreme old age. These things are not biologically impossible. They exist. They work. We can study them.
Vera Gorbunova, whose laboratory has spent years unravelling the naked mole rat’s secrets, has said that the animal has fundamentally changed how she thinks about the biology of ageing. Not because it offers easy answers, but because it proves that the answers exist somewhere in the biology of mammals — and that finding them is a question of research, not of wishful thinking.
The naked mole rat is ugly. It is strange. It lives in the dark, eats roots, and looks like something that should not exist. It is also, quietly, one of the most important animals in biomedical research — and the more we understand about how it works, the closer we get to understanding why we don’t.
