In the winter of 1963, a young female Japanese macaque at Jigokudani Monkey Park in Nagano Prefecture did something no macaque had ever been recorded doing. She waded into a hot spring that had been built for human bathers at a nearby inn. The water was warm. The air was -15°C. She stayed.

Within a few years, other members of her troop had followed. Within a decade, hot spring bathing had become a defining cultural tradition of the Jigokudani troop, practiced by generations of macaques who had never met the original innovator. Today, the image of snow-dusted Japanese macaques sitting in steaming thermal pools is one of the most recognizable wildlife photographs in the world.

What makes this story scientifically significant is not the bathing itself. It is the mechanism by which it spread. The behavior was invented by a single individual, adopted by her peers and offspring, and transmitted culturally across generations to animals born long after the original innovator died. It is one of the clearest documented examples of cultural innovation and transmission in a non-human primate, and it happened not in a remote rainforest but at a tourist attraction in central Japan.

The Snow Monkey’s Range and Resilience

Macaca fuscata is the northernmost non-human primate on Earth. It lives across the Japanese archipelago from the subtropical forests of Yakushima Island in the south to the snowy mountains of Aomori Prefecture in the north, where winter temperatures regularly drop below -15°C. No other non-human primate tolerates cold of this severity.

The adaptations that allow this are primarily behavioral and physiological. Japanese macaques have thick, dense fur that provides insulation comparable to that of arctic mammals. They huddle in groups during the coldest nights, sharing body heat. They shift their diet seasonally, moving from fruit and insects in summer to bark, buds, and stored food caches in winter. In coastal populations, individuals have been documented washing food in seawater before eating it, a behavior first recorded at Koshima Island in the 1950s by researcher Satsue Mito and subsequently studied extensively by Masao Kawai, who documented how the behavior spread through the troop in a pattern that mirrored the Jigokudani hot spring adoption decades later.

These two cases, food washing at Koshima and hot spring bathing at Jigokudani, became foundational examples in the scientific study of animal culture, demonstrating that behavioral traditions could originate with individual innovators and spread through social learning in ways that parallel human cultural transmission.

Social Structure and the Matriline

Japanese macaque society is organized around matrilineal kin groups within larger troops that can number over 100 individuals. A female’s social rank is largely inherited from her mother, and rank determines access to food, grooming partners, and the best positions in huddles during cold weather. High-ranking females have measurably better body condition, higher infant survival rates, and longer lifespans than low-ranking females in the same troop.

Researcher Michael Huffman at the Primate Research Institute of Kyoto University has studied Japanese macaque behavior for decades, documenting the social dynamics of multiple troops across Japan. His work on self-medication behavior in macaques, including the consumption of specific plant species with antiparasitic properties, has contributed to the broader understanding of how primates use their environment pharmacologically.

The troops at Jigokudani have been studied continuously since the 1960s, making them among the most thoroughly documented primate populations outside of Africa. The long-term dataset has allowed researchers to track individual life histories across multiple generations, observing how cultural traditions are maintained, modified, and occasionally lost as troop membership changes over time.

The Tourism Question

The Jigokudani troop’s fame has created a conservation paradox. The park attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors annually, generating revenue that supports the macaques’ protection and the surrounding forest. But the presence of large numbers of tourists has altered the troop’s behavior in ways that researchers are still assessing.

The macaques have become habituated to human presence to a degree that is unusual even for provisioned primate populations. They show little fear of humans, approach visitors closely, and have been involved in incidents of food theft and occasional aggression toward tourists who carry visible food. The provisioning of food by the park, which began in the 1960s to attract the macaques to the hot spring area for tourist viewing, has created a dependency that makes the troop less self-sufficient than wild, unprovisioned populations.

Whether the cultural tradition of hot spring bathing would have persisted without the park’s intervention, and whether the troop’s long-term behavioral repertoire has been impoverished by decades of provisioning, are questions that researchers continue to debate. The teenager who first stepped into that hot spring in 1963 could not have anticipated what she was starting.
