Rhincodon typus is the largest fish on Earth, reaching lengths of up to 18 meters and weights of up to 19,000 kilograms. It is also a filter feeder, consuming plankton, fish eggs, and small fish by swimming slowly through concentrations of food with its mouth open, filtering thousands of liters of water per hour through gill rakers that strain out anything edible.

The contrast between the scale of the animal and the scale of its food is one of the more striking facts in marine biology. The largest fish alive eats some of the smallest organisms in the ocean, and it does so with a mouth up to 1.5 meters wide that opens to reveal not the teeth of a predator but a filtering apparatus of extraordinary efficiency.

The teeth are there, approximately 3,000 of them arranged in rows, but they are vestigial, tiny and non-functional. The whale shark does not bite. It swims and strains, covering large distances to find the plankton blooms and fish spawning aggregations that provide the food concentrations it needs.

Simon Pierce at the Marine Megafauna Foundation has tracked whale sharks across ocean basins using satellite tags, finding that individuals make predictable seasonal movements to specific aggregation sites where food is reliably abundant. The Ningaloo Reef in Western Australia, the waters around the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico, and the seas around the Philippines all host seasonal whale shark aggregations that have become significant ecotourism destinations.

The Aggregations

At Isla Holbox and Isla Mujeres in Mexico, whale sharks gather in numbers that can exceed 400 individuals in a single area during the summer months, feeding on the eggs of spawning little tunny fish. The aggregation is one of the largest concentrations of whale sharks documented anywhere, and it has been studied intensively since its discovery in the early 2000s.

The sharks at these aggregations are predominantly male and juvenile, a demographic pattern seen at multiple whale shark aggregation sites globally. Where the females go, and where the sharks go to breed, remains one of the significant unanswered questions in whale shark biology. No whale shark mating has ever been directly observed. No pregnant female has been found at a known aggregation site. The reproductive biology of the largest fish on Earth is almost entirely unknown.

One pregnant female was caught by a fishing vessel in Taiwan in 1995 and found to contain 304 pups at various stages of development, establishing that whale sharks are ovoviviparous, with eggs hatching inside the mother. Beyond that single specimen, almost nothing is known about where, when, or how whale sharks reproduce.

The Fishing Pressure

Whale sharks are listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List, with populations declining due to fishing, vessel strikes, and entanglement in fishing gear. They are legally protected in many countries but continue to be fished in parts of South and Southeast Asia, where their fins, meat, and liver oil are commercially valuable.

The slow reproductive rate of whale sharks, which do not reach sexual maturity until approximately 25 to 30 years of age and likely live for over 100 years, makes their populations extremely vulnerable to adult mortality. Losing a single mature female represents decades of reproductive potential. The population cannot absorb sustained adult mortality and recover on any human-relevant timescale.

The bus-sized fish that eats plankton, that gathers in hundreds at specific ocean locations every year, whose entire reproductive life remains a mystery, is being killed for its fins. The largest fish on Earth is not large enough to survive that indefinitely.
