The first thing most people learn about African wild dogs is the statistic. An 80% hunt success rate. Lions manage around 25%. Leopards, perhaps 30% on a good day. The African wild dog, Lycaon pictus, is by that single measure the most efficient large predator on the continent.
The second thing people learn, usually with some confusion, is that this extraordinarily successful hunter is one of Africa’s most endangered mammals. Fewer than 6,600 individuals remain in the wild. The species has been extirpated from 25 of the 39 countries it once occupied.
Those two facts sit in uncomfortable tension, and understanding why requires looking past the hunt success rate to the animal’s actual biology and the specific pressures it faces.

Why the Hunt Works
Lycaon pictus hunts in packs, and the pack’s effectiveness comes not from speed or strength but from communication and endurance. Wild dogs are not the fastest animals on the African savanna. A cheetah can reach 112 kilometers per hour. A wild dog’s top speed is around 66 kilometers per hour. What wild dogs do instead is run at a sustained pace of 50 to 60 kilometers per hour for distances that exhaust their prey completely.
The communication during a hunt is what makes it remarkable. Researcher Reena Walker at Brown University published research in 2017 documenting that African wild dog packs make collective decisions about whether to hunt through a voting system based on sneezes. Before a hunt, pack members sneeze. If enough individuals sneeze, the pack moves. The dominant pair requires fewer votes to initiate a hunt. Lower-ranking members need more. It is, as Walker described it, a quorum-sensing mechanism in a social mammal.
This finding was initially met with some skepticism, but subsequent field observations have supported the basic pattern. The pack does not simply follow the alpha. It aggregates individual signals into a collective decision.
During the chase itself, pack members communicate continuously through high-pitched calls, coordinating pursuit angles and anticipating prey movements. When prey turns, the nearest dog cuts the angle while others maintain pressure from behind. It is relay hunting, and it works against prey that would easily outmaneuver a single predator.
The Pup-Rearing System
African wild dogs have one of the most cooperative pup-rearing systems of any carnivore. The dominant female gives birth to litters that can exceed 20 pups, though 10 to 12 is more typical. Every adult in the pack contributes to feeding and protecting the pups.
Adults returning from a hunt regurgitate meat for pups and for pack members that stayed behind to guard the den. Sick or injured adults are fed by the pack for extended periods. Researcher Joshua Millspaugh, working with long-term wild dog data from the Kruger National Park population, documented cases of injured adults being provisioned by packmates for weeks, recovering, and returning to full hunting participation.

This level of cooperative care is energetically expensive. It is also the reason wild dog packs need large territories. A pack must hunt enough prey to feed not just the hunters but the pups, the den guards, and any injured members. Researchers estimate that a pack of 10 adults with pups requires a territory of 200 to 1,000 square kilometers depending on prey density.
That territorial requirement is at the heart of the species’ conservation problem.
Why Success Isn’t Enough
Large territories mean wild dogs inevitably cross the boundaries of protected areas. And outside those boundaries, they encounter the pressures that have driven their decline across the continent.
Road kills are a significant mortality source. Wild dogs travel enormous distances daily, and roads bisecting their territories kill individuals regularly. Snares set for other animals catch wild dogs. Disease, particularly canine distemper and rabies transmitted from domestic dogs living near protected area boundaries, has devastated multiple populations. The Serengeti population, once one of the largest in East Africa, was effectively eliminated by a rabies outbreak in the 1990s.
But the most persistent pressure is direct persecution. Wild dogs have historically been viewed as vermin by farmers and even by some wildlife managers, who saw their pack hunting behavior as wasteful and destructive. Systematic culling within protected areas continued in some regions into the 1970s. The Kruger National Park, now one of the species’ strongholds, killed wild dogs as pests for decades before reversing that policy.
Researcher Rosie Woodroffe at the Zoological Society of London has spent her career studying the interface between wild dog populations and human communities, and her work consistently shows that the species’ survival outside protected areas depends almost entirely on local attitudes. Where communities have been engaged in conservation and receive tangible benefits from wildlife, wild dog survival rates outside parks improve measurably. Where they haven’t, the dogs disappear.

What Remains
The largest remaining populations are in southern Africa, particularly in the Okavango Delta of Botswana, the Selous Game Reserve in Tanzania, and the Kruger-to-Canyons Biosphere in South Africa. These populations are connected enough to maintain some genetic exchange, which is critical for a species whose small total population size makes inbreeding a real concern.
Conservation programs focused on vaccination of domestic dogs near protected area boundaries have reduced disease transmission significantly in some areas. Compensation schemes for livestock losses have reduced retaliatory killing in others. The trajectory is not hopeless. But it is fragile.
The 80% hunt success rate is real. It is also, in a sense, irrelevant to the species’ survival. Lycaon pictus is not failing because it cannot hunt. It is failing because the landscape it needs to hunt in is disappearing around it, one road, one farm, one outbreak at a time.
