In 2012, at the height of the worst poaching crisis in decades, an estimated 35,000 African elephants were killed for their ivory. That is approximately 96 elephants every day. Four every hour. One every fifteen minutes — around the clock, every day of the year.

The ivory from those elephants — carved into ornaments, jewellery, chopsticks, and religious figurines — flowed primarily to China, Vietnam, Thailand, and other Asian markets, where it was sold legally alongside stockpiled ivory, making it almost impossible for consumers to distinguish legal from illegal product. The demand was insatiable, the profits were enormous, and the killing was industrial in scale.

The African elephant (Loxodonta africana) — the largest land animal on Earth, one of the most intelligent, most socially complex, and most ecologically important animals in existence — was being slaughtered at a rate that threatened to push it toward extinction within decades.

Understanding how this happened — and why it is still happening, at a reduced but still devastating rate — requires understanding the ivory trade, the people who drive it, and the extraordinary animal that is paying the price.

The Largest Mind on Land

The African elephant’s brain is the largest of any land animal — weighing up to 5 kilograms, with a cerebral cortex of extraordinary complexity. This brain supports cognitive abilities that continue to astonish researchers: long-term memory spanning decades, the ability to recognise hundreds of individual elephants by sight, sound, and smell, sophisticated problem-solving, tool use, and what appears to be a genuine capacity for empathy.

Elephants live in matriarchal family groups of 10 to 30 individuals, led by the oldest female — the matriarch — whose decades of accumulated knowledge about food sources, water locations, migration routes, and the behaviour of predators and humans is critical to the group’s survival. Studies have shown that groups led by older, more experienced matriarchs have significantly higher survival rates during droughts and other crises — the matriarch’s memory is, quite literally, a survival resource.

Elephants communicate through a rich repertoire of vocalisations — including infrasound calls at frequencies below the range of human hearing, which can travel up to 10 kilometres through the ground and allow elephants to coordinate movement and share information across vast distances. They use touch extensively — greeting each other with trunk contact, comforting distressed individuals, and maintaining physical bonds within the family group.

And elephants grieve. The evidence for elephant grief is extensive and compelling — elephants return repeatedly to the bones of deceased family members, touching them gently with their trunks, sometimes carrying bones with them as they travel. They show signs of distress when a family member dies, and the death of a matriarch can destabilise a family group for years. Whether this constitutes grief in the full emotional sense that humans experience it is debated — but the behaviour is consistent, cross-cultural within elephant populations, and unlike anything observed in other non-human animals except great apes and cetaceans.

Two Species, One Crisis

The African elephant is not one species but two — the African bush elephant (Loxodonta africana) and the African forest elephant (Loxodonta cyclotis) — confirmed as distinct species by genetic analysis in 2010. The forest elephant, smaller and darker than its savanna cousin, lives in the dense rainforests of central and west Africa and plays a critical ecological role as a seed disperser — it is sometimes called the “megagardener of the forest” because of its importance in maintaining forest structure and diversity.

The forest elephant has been hit even harder by poaching than the bush elephant. Its dense forest habitat makes it difficult to monitor and protect, and its slower reproductive rate — females give birth only every 5 to 6 years — means that populations recover very slowly from hunting pressure. Between 2002 and 2013, the forest elephant population declined by approximately 65% — a catastrophic collapse that has received far less attention than the bush elephant’s crisis.

The Ivory Trade: A History of Destruction

The trade in elephant ivory is ancient — ivory has been valued by human civilisations for thousands of years, used for everything from piano keys to billiard balls to religious icons. But the scale of killing escalated dramatically in the twentieth century, as firearms made elephant hunting easier and growing Asian middle classes created new markets for ivory products.

By the 1980s, the African elephant population had declined from an estimated 1.3 million in 1979 to approximately 600,000 in 1989 — a loss of more than half the continental population in a single decade. The crisis prompted CITES — the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species — to impose a global ban on the international ivory trade in 1989. The ban worked: poaching declined dramatically in the 1990s, and elephant populations began to recover in many areas.

Then, in 1999 and 2008, CITES approved two “one-off” sales of stockpiled ivory from southern African countries to Japan and China — decisions that conservation organisations warned would stimulate demand and undermine the ban. The warnings proved correct. Following the 2008 sale, ivory prices in China increased dramatically, demand surged, and poaching escalated to levels not seen since the 1980s. Between 2010 and 2014, an estimated 100,000 elephants were killed — the worst poaching crisis since the trade ban.

Who Is Buying the Ivory?

The primary market for illegal ivory is China — the world’s largest consumer of ivory products, with a middle class of hundreds of millions of people for whom ivory ornaments and jewellery represent status, tradition, and investment. For decades, China maintained a legal domestic ivory market alongside the illegal trade, making it almost impossible to distinguish legal from illegal product and providing cover for traffickers.

In 2017, China announced the closure of its domestic ivory market — a landmark decision that conservation organisations had campaigned for over many years. The closure has had a measurable effect: ivory prices in China have fallen significantly, and surveys suggest that consumer demand has declined. But the market has not disappeared — it has partially shifted to other countries, including Vietnam, Laos, and Myanmar, where enforcement is weaker and demand is growing.

Vietnam has emerged as a particularly significant market — both as a consumer of ivory products and as a transit hub for ivory trafficked from Africa to China. Vietnamese demand is driven partly by traditional medicine beliefs and partly by a growing wealthy class for whom ivory products are luxury goods. Anti-poaching organisations have invested heavily in demand-reduction campaigns in Vietnam, with some evidence of success — but the market remains active.

The ivory trade is not driven only by Asian demand. In parts of Africa, ivory is traded locally for bushmeat, weapons, and other goods. Armed groups in conflict zones — including the Lord’s Resistance Army and various militias in the DRC and Central African Republic — have used ivory trafficking to fund their operations, creating a direct link between elephant poaching and human conflict.

The Poaching Networks

The ivory trade is not a cottage industry of individual poachers — it is a sophisticated criminal enterprise involving organised crime networks that span multiple continents. Ivory is collected by local poachers, consolidated by regional traffickers, exported through corrupt port officials, and distributed to retail markets by networks with connections to other forms of organised crime.

The scale of the operation requires significant investment — in weapons, vehicles, communications equipment, and bribes. The profits are correspondingly large: a single elephant’s ivory, worth perhaps $200 to a local poacher, may be worth $20,000 or more by the time it reaches a retail market in Asia. This profit margin creates powerful incentives that are difficult to overcome through enforcement alone.

Rangers who protect elephants in national parks across Africa face these networks with inadequate equipment, insufficient training, and salaries that make them vulnerable to corruption. In some parks — particularly in the DRC and Central African Republic — rangers have been killed in significant numbers by poachers who are better armed and better funded than the people trying to stop them.

The Ecological Consequences

The loss of elephants has consequences that extend far beyond the elephants themselves. As ecosystem engineers, elephants shape the landscapes they inhabit in ways that affect hundreds of other species.

In savanna ecosystems, elephants knock down trees, create clearings, and maintain the open grassland structure that supports the extraordinary diversity of African wildlife. In forest ecosystems, they disperse seeds across vast areas, maintaining forest diversity and structure. Their wallowing creates water holes used by dozens of other species. Their dung provides nutrients and habitat for insects, which support birds and other animals.

Studies in areas where elephant populations have been severely reduced show measurable changes in vegetation structure, reduced biodiversity, and altered water availability. The elephant is not just a charismatic megafauna — it is a keystone species whose presence or absence determines the character of entire ecosystems.

What Is Being Done — and What Needs to Happen

The response to the ivory crisis has been substantial but uneven. China’s ivory ban has reduced demand. CITES has strengthened enforcement mechanisms. Anti-poaching operations have become more sophisticated, using drones, camera traps, DNA analysis, and intelligence networks to identify and disrupt trafficking networks.

But poaching continues. The African elephant population — estimated at approximately 415,000 individuals today — is still declining in many parts of its range. The forest elephant remains in crisis. And the underlying drivers of the trade — poverty in source countries, demand in consumer countries, and corruption throughout the supply chain — have not been resolved.

Long-term solutions require addressing all of these drivers simultaneously: supporting ranger forces with adequate resources and pay, working with communities to create economic alternatives to poaching, reducing consumer demand through education and cultural change, and strengthening international enforcement against trafficking networks.

The elephant has survived on Earth for millions of years. It has outlasted ice ages, continental shifts, and the extinction of dozens of other megafauna. Whether it can survive the ivory trade depends entirely on human decisions — decisions being made right now, in markets in Asia, in parliaments in Africa, and in the choices of consumers around the world.
