There is a story that circulates among elephant researchers that I want to address carefully, because it sits at the boundary between documented science and compelling anecdote. In 1999, two elephants at The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee, Jenny and Shirley, were reunited after 23 years apart. They had worked together briefly in a circus as young animals. When they met again, their behavior, the vocalizations, the physical contact, the immediate intensity of the interaction, was so striking that the sanctuary staff described it as a reunion between old friends.
Whether elephants experience friendship in any sense comparable to what humans mean by that word is a question that behavioral science cannot yet answer definitively. What it can answer, with increasing precision, is that elephant memory is real, extensive, and functionally important in ways that shape the survival of entire family groups.

The Matriarch and Her Map
African elephant society is organized around matrilineal family groups led by the oldest female, the matriarch. Her age is not incidental to her role. It is the role. The matriarch’s value to her family lies almost entirely in what she has accumulated over decades of experience: knowledge of water sources, migration routes, the locations of mineral licks, the sounds and smells of predators, and the identities of hundreds of individual elephants from other family groups.
Researcher Karen McComb at the University of Sussex has conducted some of the most rigorous experimental work on elephant memory and social cognition. In a landmark 2001 study published in Animal Behaviour, McComb and her colleagues played recordings of lion roars to elephant family groups and measured their responses. Families led by older matriarchs showed significantly more coordinated and effective defensive responses than those led by younger females. The older matriarchs were better at assessing threat level, distinguishing between recordings of one lion and three lions, and directing their families’ responses accordingly.
In a follow-up study, McComb’s team played recordings of calls from elephants the family had not encountered for years. Matriarchs recognized the calls of individuals they had not heard in over a decade, responding with contact calls and approach behavior that indicated recognition. The memory was not just present. It was precise.
Grief and the Dead
Elephants respond to the deaths of family members in ways that have been documented consistently enough across independent field studies to warrant serious scientific attention, even if the interpretation of those responses remains cautious.
Cynthia Moss, who has studied the Amboseli elephant population in Kenya continuously since 1972 in one of the longest-running wildlife studies ever conducted, has documented hundreds of instances of elephants investigating the bones and bodies of dead conspecifics. They touch the bones with their trunks, particularly the skull and tusks. They return to the same remains repeatedly over years. They show this behavior toward the remains of their own family members with greater intensity than toward those of unrelated elephants.
Joyce Poole, who has collaborated with Moss at Amboseli for decades, has described observing a mother carrying her dead calf for days, a behavior documented in multiple elephant populations across Africa and Asia. Whether this constitutes grief in any phenomenological sense is a question that science appropriately declines to answer with certainty. What it does constitute is a behavioral response to death that is more elaborate and persistent than in virtually any other non-human animal.

Communication Below Human Hearing
For most of the twentieth century, researchers studying elephant communication focused on the audible calls, the rumbles, trumpets, and screams that carry across the savanna. In the 1980s, researcher Katy Payne, who had previously worked on humpback whale song with Roger Payne, noticed something unusual while standing near elephants at a zoo. She felt a throbbing in the air, a sensation she recognized from her work with whales as infrasound, sound below the threshold of human hearing.
Subsequent research confirmed that elephants communicate extensively through infrasound, producing calls with fundamental frequencies as low as 14 hertz that travel through both air and ground for distances of up to 10 kilometers. Elephants detect ground-borne vibrations through their feet and through the sensitive skin of their trunks, which they press to the ground when listening.

This discovery reframed the entire understanding of elephant social coordination. Family groups separated by kilometers can communicate, coordinate movements, and potentially warn each other of threats through a channel that human observers had been completely unaware of for the entire history of elephant research.
The Poaching Crisis and What Memory Loss Means
African elephant populations have been devastated by poaching for ivory. The species, Loxodonta africana, is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, with the forest elephant subspecies, Loxodonta cyclotis, listed as Critically Endangered. Tens of thousands of elephants are killed annually across the continent, with the killing concentrated in central and west Africa.
The conservation implications of elephant memory become particularly acute in this context. Poaching preferentially targets large-tusked individuals, which are disproportionately older females. When a matriarch is killed, her family loses not just a leader but an irreplaceable repository of ecological knowledge. Younger females who inherit leadership roles have not had decades to accumulate the knowledge of water sources, migration routes, and social relationships that made the matriarch valuable.
McComb’s research has shown that families led by younger matriarchs make measurably poorer decisions in challenging situations. The loss of experienced matriarchs is not just a demographic problem. It is a cognitive one, and its effects on family group survival extend for generations.
