In 1974, Peter Benchley published Jaws. In 1975, Steven Spielberg turned it into a film that kept a generation out of the ocean. In 2002, Benchley said publicly that he could not have written the book knowing what he knew by then about great white sharks, because the animal he had portrayed as a mindless killing machine was nothing of the sort.

That gap between the cultural image of Carcharodon carcharias and the biological reality is one of the widest in the animal kingdom. And closing it matters, because the great white shark is now listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, and public perception of the species directly affects the political will to protect it.
What the Shark Actually Is
Carcharodon carcharias is a cartilaginous fish, more closely related to rays than to bony fish like tuna or salmon. It has been on Earth in roughly its current form for approximately 16 million years, surviving the mass extinction events that eliminated the dinosaurs and reshaped marine ecosystems multiple times. It is, by any reasonable measure, one of evolution’s more successful experiments.
Adults typically reach 4 to 5 meters in length, though individuals exceeding 6 meters have been reliably documented. They are warm-blooded in a way that is unusual for fish. A process called regional endothermy allows great whites to maintain their core body temperature, particularly in the brain, eyes, and swimming muscles, several degrees above the surrounding water. This gives them a significant performance advantage in cold water, where prey animals are sluggish but the shark remains fully functional.
The sensory system is extraordinary. Great whites can detect electrical fields as weak as one billionth of a volt per centimeter through electroreceptors called ampullae of Lorenzini, distributed across the snout. They can detect blood in concentrations of one part per million in seawater. Their lateral line system detects pressure waves and water movement, effectively allowing them to sense the hydrodynamic signature of a moving animal at close range even in complete darkness.
The Bite and What It Tells Us
The great white’s bite has been the subject of significant research, partly because of its obvious relevance to human safety and partly because it reveals something important about the animal’s hunting strategy.
Researcher Tristan Guttridge, working with the Bimini Biological Field Station, and separately researcher Ryan Johnson in South Africa, have both documented what is now called the “bite and release” behavior in great white attacks on unfamiliar prey. The shark bites, releases, and waits. If the prey is suitable, it returns to feed. If not, it moves on.

This behavior is consistent with the hypothesis that great whites are cautious, investigative predators rather than indiscriminate attackers. They are generalist apex predators with a broad diet, including fish, rays, seals, sea lions, dolphins, and whale carcasses, but they appear to assess prey before committing to a full predatory sequence. Humans, who are not part of the great white’s evolutionary prey base, are frequently bitten and released rather than consumed, which is why the vast majority of great white attacks on humans are non-fatal.
Migration and the Café
For most of the twentieth century, great white sharks were assumed to be relatively localized animals, patrolling coastal waters near seal colonies. Satellite tagging studies beginning in the early 2000s revealed something completely different.
Researcher Barbara Block at Stanford University led a large-scale tagging program called the Tagging of Pacific Predators project, which tracked great white movements across the Pacific. The data showed that great whites make regular long-distance migrations between coastal feeding areas and a region of open ocean between California and Hawaii that researchers named the White Shark Café.
At the Café, sharks dive repeatedly to depths of 300 to 900 meters in a pattern that suggests active hunting in the deep scattering layer, a dense community of small fish and squid that migrates vertically through the water column daily. The Café is not a resting place. It is a feeding ground in the open ocean, far from any coastline, that no one knew existed until satellite tags revealed it.

Individual great whites have been tracked traveling over 20,000 kilometers in a single year. One female, tagged off South Africa, swam to Australia and back, a round trip of approximately 20,000 kilometers, the longest migration ever recorded for a fish.
The Population Problem
Great white sharks reproduce slowly. Females reach sexual maturity at approximately 33 years of age. They give birth to litters of 2 to 10 pups after a gestation period estimated at 12 to 18 months. A female may reproduce only a handful of times in her lifetime.
This life history makes the species extremely vulnerable to population depletion. Researcher George Burgess at the Florida Museum of Natural History, who maintained the International Shark Attack File for decades, estimated the global great white population at fewer than 3,500 individuals, making it rarer than many large terrestrial predators that receive far more conservation attention.
The threats are primarily bycatch in commercial fishing operations, targeted killing in response to attacks on humans, and the shark fin trade. Several countries, including South Africa, Australia, and the United States, have extended legal protection to great whites, but enforcement in international waters is effectively impossible.
Peter Benchley spent the last years of his life advocating for shark conservation, a reversal he described as a moral obligation. The animal he had helped demonize was, he came to understand, not a monster but a keystone predator whose removal from marine ecosystems would have consequences that rippled far beyond the ocean’s surface. The fear Jaws generated was real. The animal that generated it was something else entirely.
