On June 20, 1782, the bald eagle was chosen as the symbol of the United States of America. Benjamin Franklin famously objected, preferring the turkey, which he considered a more respectable bird. The eagle won. Nearly two centuries later, the animal on the national seal was functionally gone from most of the country it represented, reduced to fewer than 500 nesting pairs in the contiguous United States by the early 1960s.
The cause was a pesticide. The recovery was one of the most consequential acts of environmental science in American history.

DDT and the Eggshell
Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane, DDT, was introduced as an agricultural and public health pesticide after World War II and was applied across the United States on a massive scale through the 1950s and early 1960s. It was extraordinarily effective at killing insects and was initially considered safe for vertebrates.
The problem was bioaccumulation. DDT does not break down quickly in biological tissue. It accumulates in fat, and as it moves up the food chain, it concentrates. Small fish absorb DDT from contaminated water. Larger fish eat many small fish and accumulate higher concentrations. Bald eagles eat large fish and accumulate the highest concentrations of all.
At high concentrations, DDT and its metabolite DDE interfere with calcium metabolism in birds, causing females to produce eggs with shells so thin that they crack under the weight of the incubating parent. Nests that should have produced chicks produced crushed eggs instead. Breeding success collapsed across the entire bald eagle population.
Biologist Rachel Carson documented this process in her 1962 book Silent Spring, which presented the scientific evidence for DDT’s effects on bird populations to a general audience for the first time. The book was attacked by the chemical industry with a ferocity that Carson, who was dying of cancer while writing it, did not live to see fully resolved. But the scientific evidence she marshaled was sound, and it ultimately drove the US ban on DDT in 1972.

The Recovery
The bald eagle’s recovery following the DDT ban is one of the clearest demonstrations of what happens when a specific, identifiable threat to a wildlife population is removed. Within a decade of the ban, breeding success began to improve as DDT concentrations in eagle tissue declined. By the 1990s, populations had recovered sufficiently that the species was downlisted from Endangered to Threatened. In 2007, it was removed from the Endangered Species List entirely.
The current bald eagle population in the contiguous United States is estimated at over 300,000 individuals, a recovery from fewer than 500 nesting pairs in six decades. Researcher Brian Millsap at the US Fish and Wildlife Service, who has studied raptor population dynamics for decades, has described the bald eagle recovery as the most successful large bird conservation program in American history.

The recovery was not solely due to the DDT ban. Concurrent protections under the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act, which made it a federal crime to kill, possess, or disturb bald eagles, and the broader framework of the Endangered Species Act, provided the legal infrastructure that allowed the population to rebuild without ongoing human persecution.
The Bird Itself
Haliaeetus leucocephalus is a fish eagle, and its biology is organized around aquatic environments. The white head and tail that give it its name do not develop until the bird reaches sexual maturity at four to five years of age. Juveniles are mottled brown and are frequently misidentified as golden eagles by casual observers.
The feet are the eagle’s primary hunting tool. The toes are equipped with spicules, small projections on the toe pads that grip wet, slippery fish with a mechanical efficiency that no human-designed fishing tool has matched. The grip strength of a bald eagle’s talons is estimated at ten times that of a human hand.
Bald eagles are opportunistic feeders, taking fish, waterfowl, small mammals, and carrion. They are also kleptoparasites, stealing food from other birds, particularly ospreys, with a regularity that Franklin found undignified. He was not wrong about the behavior. An eagle harassing an osprey until it drops its fish and then catching the fish before it hits the water is not the behavior of a noble national symbol. It is the behavior of a very effective opportunist, which is perhaps a more honest national symbol than Franklin appreciated.
Nests That Weigh a Ton
Bald eagle nests, called eyries, are the largest bird nests in North America. A pair adds material to the same nest year after year, and nests that have been used for decades can reach dimensions of 2.5 meters across and 4 meters deep, weighing over a ton. The largest nest on record, in St. Petersburg, Florida, weighed nearly 3 tonnes before the tree supporting it collapsed.
The pair bond in bald eagles is long-term, with the same individuals returning to the same nest site year after year. Researcher Mark Stalmaster, who studied bald eagle behavior extensively in the Pacific Northwest, documented pair bonds lasting over 20 years in some cases. Whether the bond is maintained by attachment to the partner or attachment to the nest site is a question that field observation alone cannot fully resolve.

Carson did not live to see the DDT ban. She died in April 1964, two years after Silent Spring was published and eight years before the chemical she had documented was prohibited. The 300,000 eagles now nesting across the country are, in a sense, her legacy, though she would have been the first to point out that the science, not the scientist, deserved the credit.
