
In the winter of 2009, a wolverine fitted with a GPS collar by researcher Jeff Copeland at the US Forest Service Rocky Mountain Research Station walked from Idaho to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. The straight-line distance is over 800 kilometers. The wolverine covered it in weeks, crossing highways, mountain ranges, and desert terrain that no wolverine had been recorded in for over a century.
Nobody sent it there. There was no prey concentration drawing it south. There was no obvious territorial or reproductive motivation. It walked because wolverines walk, and the distances they cover in a single season are so extreme that researchers studying them have repeatedly had to check their GPS data for equipment errors before accepting that the readings were real.
Gulo gulo is the largest terrestrial member of the weasel family, weighing up to 18 kilograms. It looks like a small bear and moves like something that has decided distance is not a meaningful concept. Individual wolverines maintain home ranges of up to 1,500 square kilometers, the largest of any terrestrial mustelid, and they traverse those ranges continuously, covering 15 to 50 kilometers per day across terrain that would stop most other animals.
Built for Snow
The wolverine’s relationship with deep snow is the key to understanding its ecology. Its paws are disproportionately large, functioning as snowshoes that distribute its weight across the surface and allow it to move efficiently through conditions that immobilize deer, elk, and other prey species. The claws are semi-retractable and curved, providing grip on ice and compacted snow. The jaw muscles and teeth are powerful enough to crush frozen bone and meat, allowing wolverines to feed on frozen carcasses that other scavengers cannot access in winter.
Researcher Audrey Magoun, who has studied wolverine ecology in Alaska and the Yukon for decades, has documented wolverines caching food in natural snow refrigerators, burying meat in deep snow where it remains frozen and preserved for weeks or months. The wolverine returns to these caches repeatedly, maintaining a distributed food supply across its enormous range that buffers it against the unpredictability of winter prey availability.


The dependence on deep, persistent snow extends to reproduction. Female wolverines give birth in snow dens, excavating tunnels up to 15 meters long in stable snowpack, typically on north-facing slopes where snow persists late into spring. The kits, born in February or March, remain in the snow den for several months. If the snowpack melts too early, the den collapses and the kits die.
This reproductive dependence on persistent spring snow is the primary reason wolverines are considered a climate-sensitive species. As snowpack in mountain ranges across North America and Eurasia declines and spring melt occurs earlier, the window of suitable denning conditions is shrinking. Researcher Kevin McKelvey at the US Forest Service has modeled the relationship between projected snowpack loss and wolverine habitat availability, finding that suitable habitat could decline by 30 to 60% by the end of the century under moderate warming scenarios.
Reputation and Reality

The wolverine’s reputation for ferocity is not entirely unearned but is substantially exaggerated. Documented cases of wolverines driving grizzly bears and mountain lions from kills exist, and the behavior is real. A wolverine defending a food cache will attack animals many times its size with a persistence that larger predators find not worth the effort. The wolverine does not win these confrontations through strength. It wins through a cost-benefit calculation in the larger animal’s mind. Fighting a wolverine costs more in injury risk than the food is worth.
But the image of the wolverine as an indiscriminate killing machine that attacks anything it encounters is not supported by field observation. Wolverines are primarily scavengers in winter, feeding on the carcasses of animals killed by other predators or by starvation. In summer, they hunt small and medium-sized prey including ground squirrels, marmots, and snowshoe hares. They are opportunists, not berserkers.
Copeland’s GPS tracking data, accumulated across years of wolverine monitoring in the northern Rockies, shows animals that spend most of their time moving efficiently through their ranges, checking food caches, investigating potential prey, and covering ground with a purposefulness that suggests a detailed spatial memory of their territory. The Idaho wolverine that walked to the Grand Canyon was not lost. It was doing what wolverines do, at a scale that happened to take it somewhere unexpected.
