Both are venomous. Both are large. Both kill people every year across sub-Saharan Africa. Beyond that, the king cobra and the black mamba are so different in their biology, behavior, and venom chemistry that comparing them reveals more about snake diversity than almost any other pairing.

Speed
The black mamba, Dendroaspis polylepis, is the fastest snake on Earth, capable of moving at up to 20 kilometers per hour over short distances. This is slower than a running human but fast enough to close distance rapidly in an encounter. The speed is used primarily for escape, not attack — mambas are highly alert and prefer to flee. The Egyptian cobra, Naja haje, moves at a fraction of that speed and relies on its hood display and threat posture rather than flight when confronted.
Venom
Black mamba venom is primarily neurotoxic, blocking the neuromuscular junctions that allow muscles to contract. Without antivenom, a bite can cause respiratory paralysis and death within 7 to 15 hours. Before antivenom was available, the fatality rate from untreated black mamba bites was effectively 100%. Researcher David Warrell at the University of Oxford, who has studied snakebite across Africa and Asia for decades, has documented that the black mamba’s venom acts faster than that of virtually any other African snake.
Cobra venom is more variable by species but typically combines cytotoxic components that destroy tissue at the bite site with neurotoxic components affecting the nervous system. Spitting cobras, including the Mozambique spitting cobra Naja mossambica, can project venom accurately at the eyes of a threat from distances of up to 2.5 meters, causing severe pain and potential blindness without any physical contact.
Behavior
The black mamba is solitary, fast-moving, and diurnal, active during daylight hours. It is highly alert and will flee from humans at the first opportunity. Attacks on humans almost always involve a mamba that has been cornered, accidentally stepped on, or encountered in an enclosed space with no escape route. Researcher Mark Auliya at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research has documented that mamba aggression is almost entirely defensive.
The Egyptian cobra is more likely to stand its ground, spreading its hood and hissing before striking. It is also more tolerant of human-modified environments, frequently found near agricultural areas and human settlements where rodent prey is abundant. This habitat overlap with humans makes cobra encounters more common than mamba encounters in many parts of Africa.
Conservation Status
Neither species is currently threatened. Both are widespread across sub-Saharan Africa with stable populations. The greater conservation concern for African snakes is the indiscriminate killing of all snake species by humans who cannot distinguish venomous from non-venomous species, and the collection of venomous snakes for the illegal exotic pet trade.

Researcher Wolfgang Wüster at Bangor University, who has studied African cobra systematics and venom evolution for decades, has argued that the fear and misunderstanding surrounding venomous snakes drives unnecessary killing that affects entire snake communities, including the many non-venomous species that provide significant pest control services in agricultural landscapes.
The mamba and the cobra are not rivals. They occupy different niches, use different strategies, and rarely encounter each other. The comparison exists in human imagination more than in African ecosystems.
