The glass frogs of the family Centrolenidae are small, mostly nocturnal, and live in the cloud forests and rainforests of Central and South America. From above, they look like ordinary green tree frogs. Turn one over and the illusion collapses entirely. The ventral skin is transparent. The heart, liver, and digestive tract are visible through the skin, functioning in plain sight.

The heart is red and visibly pulsing. The liver is white. The intestines are coiled and visible in detail. In gravid females, the eggs are visible as a cluster of spheres inside the body cavity. It is, depending on your perspective, either deeply unsettling or one of the more remarkable things a vertebrate body can do.

The transparency is produced by the absence of pigment in the ventral skin and the arrangement of the internal organs, which in glass frogs are positioned to minimize their visual profile when the frog is seen from below. This matters because glass frogs sleep on the undersides of leaves, and a predator looking up through the leaf sees a frog whose body outline is disrupted by the transparency, making it harder to detect against the bright sky visible through the leaf.

The camouflage function of the transparency was confirmed in research published in 2022, which used light measurements and visual modeling to show that the transparency significantly reduces the contrast between the frog’s body and the background when viewed from below. The heart, which is red and therefore visible, is tucked close to the liver during sleep, reducing its visual signature. The frog is hiding its own heart.

The Fathers

Male glass frogs are among the most dedicated fathers in the amphibian world. After a female deposits eggs on a leaf overhanging a stream, the male guards the clutch continuously, sometimes for weeks, keeping the eggs moist by pressing his body against them and defending them against predators including wasps, flies, and other frogs.

The dedication is striking enough that it has attracted serious scientific attention. In some species, males guard multiple clutches from different females simultaneously, moving between them to provide moisture and protection. The energetic cost of this guarding behavior is significant, and males that guard clutches lose body condition measurably over the guarding period.

What drives this investment is a question with a straightforward evolutionary answer. The male that guards his eggs successfully passes on more genes than the male that does not. But the behavior itself, a small frog pressing its body against a clutch of eggs on a leaf in a cloud forest at night, week after week, is one of those animal behaviors that is easier to admire than to explain away.

The Cloud Forest Problem

Glass frogs are sensitive indicators of water quality and forest health. They breed in clean, fast-flowing streams, and their eggs require specific humidity conditions that intact forest canopy provides. Deforestation, agricultural runoff, and the fungal disease chytridiomycosis, which has devastated amphibian populations globally, all affect glass frog populations.

The chytrid fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis has caused the extinction or severe decline of over 500 amphibian species since the 1970s, in what has been described as the greatest disease-driven loss of vertebrate biodiversity in recorded history. Glass frogs are among the affected groups, with some species declining significantly in areas where the fungus has spread.

The frog that hides its heart while sleeping, that has a father willing to guard eggs for weeks in the dark, lives in forests that are disappearing and streams that are being poisoned by a fungus that arrived from somewhere else. The transparency that makes it remarkable is the same transparency that makes it fragile. You can see everything that is keeping it alive.
