The surinam toad birth process is one of nature’s most extraordinary… Is a fully aquatic frog from the rivers and flooded forests of South America, and its reproductive strategy is one of the more viscerally memorable in the vertebrate world. The female does not lay eggs in water or on leaves. The eggs are pressed into the soft skin of her back by the male during an elaborate underwater mating embrace, and the skin grows over them, encasing each egg in its own individual pocket. The young develop through the entire tadpole stage inside these pockets and emerge as fully formed froglets, pushing through the skin of their mother’s back after 12 to 20 weeks.
Each surinam toad birth ends with an emergence that is exactly as dramatic as it sounds. Each froglet breaks through the surface of the skin individually, fully formed and immediately independent. The mother’s back, which has been a honeycomb of developing young for months, returns to its normal flat appearance within days of the last froglet emerging.

The star-shaped fingertips are among the most sensitive mechanoreceptors documented in any amphibian, allowing the toad to detect the water movements produced by small fish and invertebrates in complete darkness.
The Flooded Forest and Surinam Toad Birth
The várzea and igapó flooded forests of the Amazon basin, where Surinam toads are most abundant, are among the most biodiverse freshwater habitats on Earth and among the least studied. They flood seasonally to depths of up to 10 meters, creating an aquatic environment in what is otherwise terrestrial forest, and the fish, amphibians, and invertebrates that exploit this seasonal flooding have evolved life histories tightly synchronized with the flood pulse.
Deforestation upstream alters the flood pulse, changing the timing and extent of seasonal flooding in ways that disrupt the reproductive cycles of species like the Surinam toad that depend on specific flooding conditions. The toad that carries its young in its back is sensitive to changes in the water cycle that most conservation assessments do not measure.
